Tendulkar fans eagerly await milestone

Bangalore: Millions of Sachin Tendulkar fans in the country are waiting eagerly for their idol to surpass former West Indies skipper Brain Lara's Test aggregate of 11,953 runs during the first Test against Australia starting at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here from Thursday.

The batting maestro, who has mesmerised cricket fans all over the world for the past two decades, needs just 76 runs to equal the world record and his fans in the Garden City are hoping that he gets those runs during the Test match.

Eleventh standard student of Krupanidhi College in Koramangala and an ardent fan of Tendulkar N Lochan says he would love to see the master batsman get those runs in Bangalore itself.

"I sincerely hope that he gets those 70-odd runs in the first Test itself. It will be a fitting tribute to the great man if he can score a century here and help India win the Test match because India have never won against Australia here," he said.

Another fan of Tendulkar, U Rakesh of MES Pre-University College in the city said he would not mind missing his classes to watch the legendary batsman scoring a hundred in the first Test.

"I don't mind missing my classes to watch Sachin Tendulkar get to the milestone at the Chinnaswamy Stadium itself. I would love to watch him do so because it will be an historic event to witness," he said.

Sheetal Satish, a student of St Paul's High School, said by scoring those 70-odd runs, Tendulkar would be proving to the world that he is the best batsman in the world.

"There is no doubt about his class and by getting those required runs he will only be proving to the world that he is still the best in the business," she said.

Tendulkar has so far scored 11, 877 runs from 150 Tests and 244 innings at an average 54.23 with 248 not out as his highest score with 39 centuries and 49 half-centuries.

The Mumbai star also needs two more catches to join 100-catches club.

Aussie skipper Ponting is breathing down Tendulkar's neck with 10,099 runs from 119 Tests in 199 innings averaging 58.37, including 35 centuries and 40 fifties with a strike rate of 59.04. He has also taken 134 catches.
