Claire Taylor on top of the world

Sarah Potter

Claire Taylor, England’s 33 year-old batsman, is on top of the world today after the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the first player ratings guide for the women’s game.

The world governing body took control of women’s cricket in 2005 and, with the next World Cup in Australia five months away and the Twenty20 World Cup in England next summer, the new Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Player Rankings is being hailed as a significant step forward.

After 14 successive ODI victories, England players feature strongly. Sarah Taylor, 19, who became the youngest player to 1,000 ODI runs during the summer, is ranked the fourth best batsman behind Australia’s Lisa Sthalekar and India’s Mithali Raj, while Charlotte Edwards, the captain, is fifth.

India’s fast bowler, Jhulan Goswami, tops the bowling rankings with England’s Isa Guha in second. Holly Colvin and Jenny Gunn are placed fourth and fifth and Gunn also claims fifth spot in the all-rounder’s category.
