Indian troops kill six in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Oct 12: Indian troops have shot dead six suspected militants during gunbattles in occupied Kashmir, some along the Line of Control, police said on Sunday.

Separately, at least 25 people were injured when police fired bullets and teargas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators mourning the death of protesters killed by Indian forces, police said.

The skirmishes broke out overnight as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wound up a two-day trip to the region marked by anti-India protests that left two protesters dead and nearly 80 people injured, including 34 policemen.

Four militants were killed in northern Kupwara and southern Poonch districts, both bordering Azad Kashmir, a police statement said.

Two more militants were killed in the Pulwama district, about 30km from Srinagar.

Thousands of soldiers and police in riot gear patrol Srinagar’s streets, residents said.—Agencies
